Culture and Etiquette in China

Greetings and introductions

  • The handshake is common in business in China, this can be more gentle and prolonged.
  • Always use the last name followed by formal titles such as "Mr.", "Mrs." or professional titles.
  • Business cards are essential. When offering the card, use both hands and be sure to receive the card in the same manner.

Negotiations

  • Negotiations can be slow and protracted.
  • Decisions are often made as a group, so it may be necessary to present your proposal several times or wait for approval.
  • In China, Western platforms such as Google, WhatsApp and Facebook are not accessible. Familiarize yourself with local platforms such as WeChatwhich is widely used for business and personal communications.

Official currency

  • The official currency of China is the Chinese yuan (CNY) Symbol: ¥
  • Yuan banknotes come in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 yuan. Coins come in smaller denominations such as 1 yuan, 0.5 yuan (jiao), and 0.1 yuan (fen).

Currency exchanges

  • The yuan is usually not widely available outside China, so it is advisable to exchange money upon arrival in the country. Options include airports, banks and hotels.
  • ATMs in major cities allow you to withdraw yuan with international cards, although it is advisable to confirm with your bank if your card is enabled for use abroad.
  • In China, it is not common to accept foreign currencies. It is better to carry yuan or pay with mobile payment apps.

Common payment methods

  • Electronic payments: To make electronic payments you should consider the following applications:
    • WeChat Pay: WeChat messaging application, is used for all types of transactions, from shopping to cab or restaurant payments.
    • Alipay: Similar to WeChat Pay, Alipay is a mobile and online payment platform. Both methods allow you to scan QR codes to pay quickly and securely.
  • Credit and debit cards:
    • These international credit card franchises are accepted, but their use is limited mainly to hotels, large chain stores, and tourist restaurants.
  • Cash:
    • Although electronic payments are the most popular, cash is still accepted.
    • If you need to change money, you can do so at airports, banks or authorized exchange houses.

Tips

  • Tipping is not part of Chinese culture and, in most cases, is neither expected nor necessary. In restaurants, cabs and hotels, tipping is not common, and in some places could be mistaken for an inappropriate gesture.
  • In luxury or very touristy establishments, such as international hotels, tips may be accepted, but this is the exception rather than the rule.
